Limescale is the hard chalky substance that builds up around the home in bathrooms and kitchens. The substance quickly accumulates around toilet bowls, taps and baths. Out of all the areas and appliances in homes, the toilet is one of the most problematic and this is because it sees a lot of use and constantly has still water sitting inside of it, which is the perfect environment for limescale to thrive.

Taking to a dedicated cleaning page on Facebook called Mrs Hinch Cleaning tips, one woman asked for advice on how to remove what appeared to be limescale from her toilet.

Catia Lagoa said: “I bet someone already asked this question a few times, but how can I get rid of this in the bottom of my toilet?

“I already used bleach overnight and coke and they didn't work. It always looks dirty. I don’t know if it's limescale or something?”

The post received over 130 comments from fellow cleaning fanatics eager to share their top tips. Of all the comments the most popular was to use a dishwasher tablet.

Eleana Jackson said: “Drop a dishwasher tablet in the toilet and leave overnight. My toilet was completely covered in thick and stubborn limescale and it cleared it up.”

Lara Simmonds advised: “Use a dishwasher tablet. It worked like magic on my toilet and barely costs compared to other cleaning products.”

Sally Phillips explained: “My son and daughter-in-law both get the same in their houses and they both use dishwasher tablets down the toilet overnight and they say it works so well.”

Diane Marsh suggested: “Dishwasher tablets are the best thing you can use to remove limescale from toilets as it dissolves it all.”

Rita Murray commented: “Mine was really bad and I just put a dishwasher tablet down it and left it overnight. The stains were all gone by the next morning.”

Wendy Grayson added: “Try a dishwasher tablet. It works better than bleach and it won’t damage your toilet or drain.”

Dishwasher tablets are designed to dissolve hard water stains, so they’re the perfect solution for cleaning toilets.

Besides cleaning dishes and toilet bowls, homeowners can use dishwasher tablets for a few more cleaning projects around the house. 

Much like how they remove the hard water lines out of toilet bowls, these tablets can be used to clean showers. They work to get rid of layers of soap scum and give showers a brand-new look.

Dishwasher tablets can be purchased from all local supermarkets, but they are particularly cheap at Wilko. The tablets retail here for £1 for a pack of 30 - this works out as just over 3p per tablet.

Other Mrs Hinch fans suggested using white vinegar to remove nasty limescale stains from toilets. 

Anna Green suggested: “Bail out all the water and fill it with neat white vinegar, leave overnight or as long as possible then flush. This should get rid of it completely.”

Joanna Asiorowska advised: “Boil 500ml of vinegar, pour in the toilet and leave for the night. The next morning it will be like brand new.”

Jane Butler wrote: “White vinegar will resolve the limescale and is as cheap as chips. It can also be used on multiple items like glass and ceramic tiles.”

James Stuart said: “Try spraying loads of white vinegar in there. I think that might do it.”

Elaine Fletcher commented: “It’s limescale. Gently chip off the hard, crusty bits and empty the bowl and apply white vinegar to the area. Leave for a few minutes, or better still as long as possible, then flush and brush with the toilet brush. Job done.”

White vinegar is a great option to remove toilet limescale the acid in this kitchen staple is what makes it so effective in breaking downs the hard water stains.
