The new multipack rolls use 30% less plastic packaging than the standard rolls, saving 84t of plastic.

British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has launched own-brand double-length toilet rolls designed to reduce both plastic and cardboard waste at home.

The new multipack rolls have twice as many sheets on each roll as the standard version and use an average of 30% less plastic, which could save an estimated 84t of plastic.

In addition, the toilet rolls use 50% less cardboard from card cores, equating to a cardboard use reduction of 164t in total.

Because the double-length toilet rolls cover less space, this translates to removing 28% of lorries from the roads, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Sainsbury’s said that the products are available across ‘Super Soft’ and ‘House 247’ ranges, with prices starting from £1.75 for a multipack of two double rolls.

They are now available for purchase in-store and online.

In a statement, Sainsbury’s said: “All toilet roll plastic packaging is recyclable. Customers can simply bring it to one of Sainsbury’s front-of-store flexible plastics recycling points.

“The points are available in all Sainsbury’s UK supermarkets, helping customers to correctly dispose of flexible plastic packaging.”

The retailer has also partnered with cancer charity Bowel Cancer UK, which aims to raise awareness of symptoms and signs of the disease.

It will print the charity’s logo and a list of bowel cancer symptoms across its own-brand toilet paper from October this year.

The launch of double-length toilet rolls is part of Sainsbury’s wider commitment to halving its own-brand plastic packaging output by 2025.

It comes after the retailer launched own-brand 1l refillable handwash pouches last month.

The pouches are claimed to use 85% less plastic and cost 35% less than equivalent bottles, removing 28t of plastic every year.

Sainsbury’s plans to introduce quadruple-strength squash bottles to replace its double-strength squash bottles this month. This move is expected to save 177t of plastic a year.
